COVID-19 in Children Seminar Series: Health Disparities and Racism in the Time of COVID

This session focuses on Health Disparities and racism in the time of COVID-19. The presenter shared that the majority of children who die from COVID-19 are children of color. Why is this? The vast majority of children dying from the disease are Hispanic, Black or Native American. Staggering racial disparity of the children who died. 78% were children of color. Most of the children who died had an underlying condition that made them more vulnerable to complications from the virus. Social determinants of health: Discussed what these are, and how resources have a significant influence on the population health outcomes. Talked about how the SDH and COVID-19 are exacerbated by the pandemic. Other topics include: Systemic inequalities in healthcare, Bias, structural racism, human factors and recommendations to help. Discussed the specifics of racism during the pandemic and the impact on Chinese Americans. The AAP Policy statement: The Impact of Racism on Child and Adolescent Health. Discussion turned to clinical practice recommendations and workforce development and/education, ongoing research.
