This targeted course trains healthcare providers to rapidly identify and assess respiratory distress in pediatric patients using clear, observable clinical signs. Through focused video modules and real-world examples, learners will strengthen their ability to perform age-appropriate assessments and recognize key indicators of distress, including abnormal breathing patterns, retractions, and upper airway obstruction.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Identify a child in respiratory distress
  2. Accurately measure respiratory rate and recognize tachypnea based on age.
  3. Recognize retractions as a physical sign of respiratory distress.
  4. Identify nasal flaring, head bobbing, and cyanosis as signs of distress and differentiate severity based on physical exam.
  5. Review the physiology behind grunting and identify its presence in distressed pediatric patients.
  6. Review signs of upper airway obstruction, recognize stridor on physical exam, and differentiate it from other airway sounds
