Transformers of Oral Health Series: Management of Diabetes in Dentistry

This course will provide an overview of diabetes as it relates to oral health. We will discuss the types of diabetes, the pathophysiology of this disease, and list common antihyperglycemic medications. Dalia Seleem, DDS, PhD will primarily discuss some of the medical emergencies encountered in dental clinical practices that may occur as a result of complications from poorly managed diabetes. In addition, we will highlight some of the common oral manifestations of unmanaged diabetes. Upon completion of this course, you will gain an understanding of some of the dental clinical management of patients with diabetes in terms of dental treatment planning, scope of dental procedures to be performed based on the assessment of the level of management of the diabetes and the invasiveness of the dental procedure.

5. Discuss dental treatment considerations for persons living with diabetes.
