Overview
This two-hour workshop provides an introduction to eco-anxiety, climate distress, and related mental health impacts of climate change for physicians and clinicians. It will cover the latest theory and practice in climate-aware therapy and will foreground resilience building practices that are applicable to vulnerable groups (i.e. youth/students, members of historically marginalized groups, people with pre-existing mental illness, climate and environmental professionals/activists). Participants will gain knowledge of key climate psychology terms and concepts, new tools and frameworks for clinical practice, and an understanding of win-win solutions in the emerging field of climate-mental health that demand inner (personal) and outer (community, institutional, planetary) action.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Explore how climate change affects mental health, particularly in marginalized communities, children, young people, those with pre-existing mental illness, and frontline climate professionals.
  2. Define emerging climate psychology terms such as climate distress, eco-anxiety, and climate grief.
  3. Explore approaches and frameworks for addressing climate distress in clinical settings and utilize professional resources to enhance training and support in this area.
  4. Recognize the importance of community-focused peer support systems for addressing climate distress, and explore avenues to actively contribute to and promote such initiatives as a specialist.

Accreditation

In support of improving patient care, Stanford Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
