Beyond Racial Justice Performance: Understanding the Role of Reflection, Context, Action, and Systemic Change
8:10AM - 9:10AM
Diane T. Chin, JD

How can doctors and lawyers work to achieve social change that advances racial justice? Many legal and medical professionals are drawn to their work from a goal of service and community impact.  Many of the methods for instructing and training medical and law students as well as entrenched systems of inequity can shift that focus.  New models in training lawyers to serve communities, develop critical analyses to support social movements, and understand how discrimination and trauma impact the lives of clients provide an interesting focal point to discuss how doctors and lawyers can meet the racial justice reckoning that is calling for a new paradigm.  Doctors’ patients and racial justice lawyers’ clients confront social determinants that impact their health, their ability to exercise their civil rights, and to access life-sustaining programs and services.  The current the experiences of discrimination and violence for Asian Americans, Pacific Island Americans, South Asian Americans, and Southeast Asian Americans provide an example of how entrenched racism and systemic failures call for medical and legal professionals to bring their expertise to move beyond racial justice performance.

Have you ever felt like an outsider at work? Is it challenging to fit in with your peers and colleagues at times? Were you ever in a situation at work when your colleagues made you uncomfortable, and you had to navigate the pros and cons of letting it go or speaking up? In this interactive workshop, we will define individual cultural identity and cultural assimilation, within the context of the healthcare setting. Through this reflective and interactive workshop, we will give examples to assist in recognizing the pressure to culturally assimilate for advancement and discover tools to foster an environment that is inclusive to all cultural identities.

Our workshop aims to elevate everyone to a seat at the table through effective mentorship of underrepresented individuals within medicine. “A seat at the table” is defined as having one’s voice heard and feeling empowered to evoke change and create influence. Recognizing that within medicine we are often simultaneously the mentor and the mentee, our overarching goal is to help individuals both grow into successful mentors and seek out successful mentorship.

Microaggressions weighing you down? Have you witnessed a microaggression in progress? Would you have liked to share the experience and your response in a supportive environment? Microaggressions can have a profound impact on the mental and physical health of medical trainees. Support groups can offer a powerful way to help process these traumatic experiences while also building community. In this workshop, you will have the opportunity to learn about and experience the benefits of peer- and faculty-led support groups and design the best one for you and your department.

Stanford Medicine’s healthcare workforce does not reflect our nation’s diverse population. We know that patients have better outcomes when cared for by healthcare workers from similar backgrounds. This workshop will explore how to overcome the challenges of increasing Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) efforts in training programs by providing useful tools to bridge the gap between our values and the current reality.

Mindfulness of language is a tool for members of healthcare teams to remain objective and advocate for their patients. It is the responsibility of all members of clinical teams to cultivate an environment that embodies diversity, strives for equity, and offers experiences of inclusion. There is an abundance of literature supporting the notion that communication is vital for health equity, clinical environments, and positive patient outcomes. The words we choose to communicate with have the power to create experiences of inclusion and exclusion and influence clinical outcomes.

This workshop focuses on the importance and meaning of names - their history, meaning, and correct pronunciation. Participants will examine the importance of name pronunciation in identity affirmation, illustrate the historical instances of racism that contribute to name mispronunciation, employ tools to engage in productive conversation around name pronunciation, and apply name affirmation tools to clinical settings, medical education, and the workplace. We will use breakout groups to discuss cases as applied to the workplace and healthcare in particular, creating room for vibrant discussion around this important topic.

This workshop aims to prepare healthcare providers to better serve communities disproportionately affected by COVID-19 and address issues surrounding vaccine access. We will review the historical mistreatment of Black and Hispanic/Latinx communities, discuss present day COVID-19 health disparities, and identify equity frameworks necessary for conversations on vaccine access and distribution. Our goal is to provide each clinician with tangible tools for anti-racist patient and community engagement to close the gap of COVID-19 health inequities.
