Overview
Shin pain is a common concern among athletes of all ages, especially during times of increased activity. Distinguishing between "shin splints" (medial tibial stress syndrome) and bone stress injuries can be challenging, as their symptoms often overlap. Join us for an informative session where you'll gain valuable insights into the risk factors and underlying causes of shin pain. Our expert panel, including a sports medicine physician and an athletic trainer, will guide you through essential topics such as diagnosis, clinical examination techniques, imaging methods, and effective management strategies. Additionally, we will discuss guidelines for safely returning to sport and share practical strategies for prevention.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Differentiate between "shin splints"/MTSS and bone stress injuries
  2. Discuss risk factors and etiology for shin pain in the active pediatric population
  3. Review methods for accurate diagnosis of shin pain e.g. palpation skills, indications for the use of imaging
  4. Describe shin pain treatment and return to sport timelines
  5. Explain preventative measures to reduce shin pain recurrence

Stanford Medicine (BOC AP#: 0000751) is approved by the Board of Certification, Inc. to provide continuing education to Athletic Trainers (ATs). This program is eligible for a maximum of 1.00 Category A hours/CEUs. ATs should claim only those hours actually spent in the educational program. 

 
Stanford Health Care Department of Rehabilitation is an approved provider for physical therapy and occupational therapy for courses that meet the requirements set forth by the respective California Boards. This course is approved for 1.0 hour CEU for PT and OT.
