Overview
This workshop is designed for clinicians to better understand and have tools to support queer individuals in early psychosis and clinical high-risk for psychosis programs. The session will offer practical strategies for incorporating queerness into psychosis services including peer support, affirming identities in diagnosis, and incorporating queer voices. Participants will consider the over diagnosis of personality disorders, misinterpretation of queer-specific experiences as pathology, discrimination from healthcare providers, and a lack of education and research on LGBTQIA+ mental health. Additionally, this workshop combines research, lived experience perspectives, and actionable steps to create psychosis programs that honor and affirm queer identities, fostering equity and inclusivity in mental health care.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Define challenges LGBTQIA+ individuals face in psychosis services and explain the relationship between minority stress and discrimination in the context of psychosis symptoms.
  2. Recognize the importance of peer support for LGBTQIA+ individuals experiencing psychosis.
  3. Incorporate LGBTQIA+ perspectives in clinical interactions and psychosis programs.
  4. Discuss communication skills needed to build trust with LGBTQIA+ individuals experiencing psychosis.
  5. Discuss approaches for reducing stigma and promoting inclusivity in psychosis care
