Overview
This workshop will describe recent work that has shown how common visual and multi-modal hallucinations are in people at Ultra High Risk of Psychosis, those with First Episode, and those with complex presentations of PTSD and Psychosis. High occurrence rates of visual, tactile, and other sensory experiences will lead to new research that particularly considers the impact of these experiences when they happen together. For example, someone may report seeing, feeling, and hearing a hallucination at the same time, which is termed a multimodal hallucination. These seem particularly powerful experiences, and yet we do not have the tools to understand and treat them. This course will explore what leads to these (with particular consideration of the roles of processes like imagery, trauma, and dissociation), which can then be used as the underpinnings of new treatments where therapists help people understand what can cause these distressing experiences. From this workshop, clinicians will be able to identify hallucinations across sensory modalities and be able to draw on normalizing information that other people have similar experiences and that they do not need to be afraid. Furthermore, clinicians will be aware of key factors that increase the chance of having visual or tactile experiences that guide treatment. These treatments will help the person learn to manage their hallucinations differently using the best coping strategies and treatments.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Discuss the occurrence of hallucinations across sensory domains in people with psychosis.
  2. Identify the impact and importance of non-auditory hallucinations, and to understand what a multimodal hallucination is.
  3. Dissect and assess these experiences using existing and bespoke tools.
  4. Identify key intervention techniques and approaches that may help alleviate the distress associated with visual and multimodal hallucinations.
  5. Acquire the skills to talk to people with these experiences and help them understand and manage them better.
