Overview
In the last few decades, positive psychology and positive psychotherapy has been investigating and deploying transdiagnostic processes to improve happiness and well-being above and beyond simply decreasing pathology. By the end of this case-based, practical, and highly experiential workshop, attendees will be able to explain Seligman’s PERMA definition of well-being and happiness, as well as related concepts, such as resilience and growth mindset, have sampled exercises to help identify, practice, and enhance character strengths and virtues, and be able to use them to improve mood and bolster CBT. In addition, attendees will be able to explain how positive emotions are affected by met and unmet needs, perform an exercise to identify and target need imbalances, as well as barriers to need satisfaction and use at least 3 other common tools in positive psychotherapy.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Explain Seligman’s PERMA definition of well-being and happiness, as well as related concepts, such as resilience and growth mindset.
  2. Explain how positive emotions are affected by met and unmet needs.
  3. Name at least three other activities that have been shown to enhance mood, happiness, or wellbeing.
  4. Describe how many psychological difficulties can be reformulated in terms of underuse, overuse, disbalance, or stuckness in local minima, of multiple positive psychology processes.
  5. Identify 3 ways in which Positive Psychology is integrated in evidence-based therapeutic Interventions, such as Freeman et al.’s Feeling Safe Programme or Slade et al.’s Positive Psychotherapy for Psychosis Group, and how it can be integrated into traditional CBTp, in particular formulation, Catch it, Check it change it, ABCs, and reframing.

In support of improving patient care, Stanford Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
