Overview
In this recorded Palliative Care Educational Series presentation, Stanford Medicine Inpatient Palliative Care Chaplain Reverend Emily Linderman discusses spiritual care assessment for Spiritual Care Generalists. In this lecture, Reverend Linderman begins by discussing ownership of one’s own inner world, in areas such as music and nature. She also discusses moral beauty, the antithesis of moral injury and moral stress that many care providers may experience. She also discusses how we process and contemplate birth and death. She advocates for providers to remember to be in awe of all aspects of life’s experience, both positive and those often seen as negative, encouraging attendees to express what has them in awe. Moving to her didactic portion, Reverend Linderman defines spirituality, noting that it does not have include a god or religion. She then defines religion, noting its similarity, but also differences in the definition of spirituality. She then explains when a spiritual care provider may be requested, noting that it must not always be related to religion. Reverend Linderman outlines how spiritual relationships do not have to be bound by one’s personal religious beliefs, and can be found in every relationship. Reverend Linderman then discusses the spiritual screening process when patients enter the healthcare system, and how to act in service of spiritual freedom and the “3 teachers” philosophy.  Reverend Linderman concludes by proposing open ended questions to attendees to contemplate going forward.
