Overview
In this recorded Anesthesia Grand Rounds presentation, Dr. Blair Bigham discusses modern medicine and how it has changed the way we die. In his lecture, Dr. Bigham begins by discussing his personal experiences with death, from his time spent as paramedic to his current role as an intensivist at Scarborough Health network. He then discusses the cultural influences now have on medicine in relation to death, and how technology can complicate what was once seen as a very natural process. Dr. Brigham then goes on to review the birth of intensive care medicine, and the emergence of the “grey zone” of care, where modern medicine was being used to keep terminally ill patients alive, but recovery was not foreseeable. Dr. Bigham discusses how the definition of death needed to change as modern medicine was keeping patients physically alive, while experiencing brain death. Moving to the present, Dr. Bigham discusses the “Death Dilemma”, and what factors effect defining death into today’s care decisions and the sensitive nature of discussing death with families. Dr. Bigham concludes his lecture by sharing his own personal experiences with facing the potential death of a loved one and finding the “sweet spot” for death.
