Overview

In this recorded Cardiology Grand Rounds presentation, Medical Director and President of the Louisville Metabolic and Atherosclerosis Research Center Dr. Harold Bays discusses how obesity may cause Cardiometabolic Disease. In this session, Dr. Bays begins with reviewing the connection between caloric intake and metabolic rates on obesity as well as the effects of stress on obesity and cardiometabolic disease, and how the two can often be bidirectional. Dr. Bays then discusses obesity as a chronic metabolic disease and how it can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. He then moves on to define and discuss Adiposopathy, insulin resistance and diabetes. He also outlines the importance of weight reduction for diabetes remission and reduction of thrombosis. Dr. Bays also correlates obesities with ever more prevalent issues such as cancer and sleep apnea. He concludes with addressing the best times to treat obesity and newly emerging treatments to do so.
