Overview
Today, Ken Sutha, MD, PhD, an Instructor of Pediatric Nephrology at Stanford Medicine Children’s Health, will introduce our topic and speakers on Healthcare Barriers for LGBTQ+ People with Disabilities. Our speakers include Shane Lamba, MPH, a Health System Specialist with the Office of Health Equity at the US Department of Veterans Affairs, and Cameron Whitley, PhD, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA. During our conversation, we will explore healthcare obstacles and experiences for LGBTQ+ individuals with disabilities, focusing on the challenges faced by transgender people with disabilities. Topics will include access to care, physical functioning, and psychosocial health outcomes for LGBTQ+ people with disabilities. Through a personal narrative, learners will gain insights into the barriers to care and the lack of compassion that can deter LGBTQ+ individuals from seeking medical assistance. We will also discuss strategies to enhance healthcare services for the LGBTQ+ community and address the necessary educational initiatives.
