In this recorded Urology Grand Rounds presentation, Stanford Urology Resident Dr. Anas Tresh discusses interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) and the risk of vision changes with use of the oral medication Pentosan Polysulfate Sodium (PPS). Dr. Tresh begins by reviewing the condition itself, treatment approaches (such as PPS), AUA guideline recommendations, and findings from studies on associations between PPS and development of characteristic maculopathy. Dr. Tresh then highlights that IC/BPS lacks definitive treatments, and while PPS helps some patients it may also cause irreversible retinal damage from pigmentary maculopathy, especially with higher cumulative doses and longer duration of use. He concludes by emphasizing a focus on patient education about retinal risk before starting PPS and monitoring changes with eye exams during treatment.
