Palliative care can help ease suffering and improve well being in people living with serious illness. Essentials of Palliative Care is a case-based course designed to help us better understand and practice the principles of palliative medicine—communication, psychosocial support and addressing goals of care—in effort to improve quality of life for cancer patients and their families. Essentials of Palliative Care features presentations from a variety of Stanford palliative medicine clinicians as well as video scenes with a fictional patient experiencing colon cancer.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Determine the scope and role of palliative care as part of a patient and family care plan
  2. Develop goals of care and advance care planning, communicate treatment decisions with patients and families on a regular basis, and document those goals and treatments
  3. Incorporate empathy, active listening, and specialized communication protocols (e.g. SPIKES and NURSE) to effectively communicate with patients and their families
  4. Refer patients and their families to specialists as needed to support their psychosocial wellbeing

In support of improving patient care, Stanford Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Credit Designation

American Medical Association (AMA)
Stanford Medicine designates this Enduring Material for a maximum of 11.50 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) 
Stanford Medicine designates this enduring material activity for a maximum of 11.5 ANCC contact hours.  

ASWB Approved Continuing Education Credit (ACE) – Social Work Credit 
As a Jointly Accredited Organization, Stanford Medicine is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. Social workers completing this activity receive 11.5 continuing education credits. 

American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) - Enduring Materials
