Overview

This summit is in joint providership with Stanford University School of Medicine and George Mark Children's House.  The summit is targeted to a pediatric audience to highlight skills specific for providers who are interested in learning more about pediatric palliative care practice, techniques and teamwork.   

There will be both presentations and breakout sessions for more in-depth learning opportunities In the areas of communication, symptoms management, self-care, integrative care and ethics of pediatric palliative practices.

Statement of Need

Pediatric providers are often at a loss about the best way to approach families regarding communication of bad news regarding prognosis, end-0f-life, etc..  Advanced symptom management will also be addressed in this symposium.  The ethics of Pediatric Palliative care and end of life care will be discussed along with self-care topics will be introduced.  Parent perspectives will be a part of this program to round out the experience during this meeting.

Objectives
AT THE CONCLUSION OF THIS ACTIVITY, PARTICIPANTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO:

  1. Recognize when a family requires the expertise of a specialized pediatric palliative care team
  2. Arrange and hold a goals of care conference with a family of a critically ill or dying child
  3. Marshall recourses such as child life, social work, integrative services to a child with chronic medical needs to improve their life journey
  4. Show appropriate interpersonal and communication skills at end of life
  5. Transition a child into a hospice setting at end of life effectively to minimize suffering for the child and family

The Stanford University School of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Physicians
The Stanford University School of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 12.5 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM.  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Coalition for Compassionate Care of California (CCCC)
Full attendance at the workshop is a prerequisite for receiving professional continuing education credit. Attendees must provide their professional license number when registering and complete an online survey within 30 days following the workshop to receive a CEU certificate. Certificates will be sent via email. PLEASE NOTE: 50 minutes minimum of uninterrupted time is required to qualify for one hour of CE credit. Continuing education excludes lunch and breaks.

Social Workers
Course meets the qualifications for 12 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and/or LEPs and required by the California Board of Behaviorial Sciences. CCCC is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LCSWs and LMFTs, Provider #91987.

Chaplains
This program may be used for continuing education credit for chaplains certified with the Board of Chaplaincy Certification Inc.
