Overview

Internet Enduring Material Sponsored by Stanford University School of Medicine. Presented by the  Center for Health Education at Stanford University School of Medicine.  This course is designed to teach students how the health care system works. It will introduce the principal institutions and participants in health care systems, explain what they do, and discuss the key interactions between them. The course will cover physician practices, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, and insurance and financing arrangements. It also includes discussion of the challenges of health care cost management, quality of care, and access to care.

The course focuses on the U.S. health care system, and makes some reference to health care systems in other developed countries. This course aims to make students conversant in the key issues they will encounter and need to understand to be strong participants in efforts to improve health care delivery and the health care system.
