Master Clinician Series 2024 December: Learning From The Hearing Voices Movement: Mutual Aid Outside The Medical Model

Emerging from the patient-survivor movement, community development initiatives, and European social psychiatry, the Hearing Voices Movement centers on mutual aid support groups that provide unique opportunities for psychosis recovery and social integration found nowhere else in mental health care. Based in the principles of self-determination and social response outside the medical model, the Hearing Voices Movement offers lessons for the care and treatment of human experiences labeled psychosis. This workshop, led by group facilitator and Hearing Voices USA co-founder Will Hall, provides an introduction to the core practices and perspectives of the movement with an eye toward reshaping clinical practice.

1. Review the history of the Hearing Voices Movement.
2. Recognize the basic philosophy and practices of the Hearing Voices Movement approach. including research and practice outcomes.
3. Identify core areas of practice innovation for the clinical and social response to voice hearing and psychotic experiences, both clinical and non-clinical.
4. Employ a basis for follow up for people initiating and facilitating groups in their professional practice contexts.

In support of improving patient care, Stanford Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Continuing Education (CE) credits for psychologists are provided through the co-sponsorship of the American Psychological Association (APA) Office of Continuing Education in Psychology (CEP). The APA CEP Office maintains responsibly for the content of the programs.
