Overview
Clinicians working with individuals with psychosis frequently identify challenges in differentiating between delusions and ‘extreme beliefs’ and how to respond to these. Conspiracy theories, in particular, highlight a form of extreme belief that clinicians may come across in routine clinical practice but that don’t necessarily fit into the usual criteria for understanding or working with delusions. Led by experts on delusions (Professor Richard Bentall) and conspiracy theories (Dr. Daniel Jolley) this workshop will present the current research on beliefs, delusions, and conspiracy theories, examine the intersection across these belief structures, and draw upon clinical case studies to discuss opportunities for treatment and interventions.

  2. List 3 psychological factors consistent with conspiracy theories
  3. Differentiate between conspiracy theories and delusions
  4. Identify areas of overlap between conspiracy theories and delusions
  5. Name core clinical skills for responding to individuals presenting with conspiracy theories, delusions, or both.
