Overview
In this recorded OB/GYN Grand Rounds presentation, Dr. Shazeen Suleman discusses caring for newcomer families in the United States, particularly immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. She examines the different migration processes, terminologies, and challenges these communities face. Furthermore, Dr. Suleman provides a comprehensive approach, called the CLEAR approach, to address their healthcare needs, including trauma-informed care, cultural safety, and addressing social determinants of health. She emphasizes the importance of community engagement, advocacy, and research to improve health outcomes for these populations. Lastly, Dr. Suleman shares critical resources, tools, and strategies for healthcare providers to better support and care for newcomer families. These include understanding eligibility for public benefits, connecting families with social services, and involving community members in research and advocacy efforts.
