Overview

Internet Enduring Material Sponsored by Stanford University School of Medicine. Presented by the Division of Neuromuscular Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.

Continuing medical education and training in this era of disease-modifying treatments for the evolving SMA phenotype requires thoughtfulness for the most optimal outcomes.  With the implementation of the most current newborn screening guidelines, clinicians managing individuals with SMA require up-to-date knowledge on the treatment landscape, long-term outcomes, and clinical-decision making.  We intend to continue to enhance the knowledge and understanding of healthcare providers including physicians, specialists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, nurses, and providers not affiliated with specialized centers, in the clinical decision-making and medical and rehabilitative management of individuals with SMA.

This recorded educational lecture series is provided to (1) integrate new 2022 treatment developments as well as anticipated long-term outcomes into clinical decision-making; and (2) support healthcare providers, outside of specialized SMA centers, to manage individuals with SMA using evidence-based rehabilitation and medical strategies.

The recorded sessions provide an overview of the SMA treatment landscape and beyond, long-term outcomes, re-evaluation, and monitoring and optimization for best outcomes for individuals identified via newborn screening. Multi-disciplinary management including orthopedic, nutritional, and mental-health considerations will be discussed. At the end of this course, participants will have strategies to utilize the current advances in therapeutic treatments, clinical, and rehabilitative management in SMA. Learners will understand opportunities available to enhance clinical care, determine the most appropriate treatment, medical and rehabilitative interventions.
