Overview
This on-demand training will explore Social Determinants of Health (SDH) and how they impact health and mental health functioning and outcomes. SDH are the complex, integrated, and overlapping social structures, policies, and economic systems, including the social and physical environments, health-services structure, and societal factors that are responsible for most health inequities. Key to this are the ways in which SDH intersect to either promote the health and wellbeing of communities or to prevent individuals and communities from reaching health equity. These SDH create differential impacts around substance use disorder, the opioid epidemic, and the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Recall at least two (2) differences between health equity and health equality.
  2. Describe the theoretical framework of intersectionality and identify at least two (2) ways that multiple overlapping social identities can impact an individual.
  3. Explain stigma and at least three (3) impacts it has on the patients we treat.
  4. Define social determinants of health and propose and explore at least three (3) ways they may affect the population you serve.
