MAT Waivered Prescriber Support Initiative Presents: New Data on Fentanyl

MAT Waivered Prescriber Support Initiative Presents: New Data on Fentanyl Banner

Date & Location
Friday, February 19, 2021, 12:00 AM - Wednesday, August 31, 2022, 12:00 AM, Online

Overview
As U.S. fentanyl deaths increased 10-fold from 2013 to 2018, this toll was concentrated in the Midwest, Appalachia, and New England. Unfortunately, fentanyl has now spread to the Western U.S. According to a recent study, in which investigators systematically collected publicly available medical examiner/coroner data from 2019 and 2020, across all jurisdictions with available data - including Arizona, California, Seattle, Denver, Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth - fentanyl deaths increased. Additionally, available data from 2020 shows further growth. During this time, the share of the national synthetic narcotic mortality in Western states nearly tripled. Co-involvement of fentanyl with other substances has also increased. Based on current trajectories, fentanyl deaths in these Western jurisdictions are about 3-4 years behind the Eastern and Midwestern U.S. We therefore have time - and many tools - to avert another public health disaster. This presentation will review a recently published paper that evaluated fentanyl use in the Western US and will present new tools and strategies available to address the rise in fentanyl use and prevent further deaths.
