Overview
The pediatric emergency department provides simulation-based education for physicians and interprofessional team members—including nursing, technicians, pharmacy, and respiratory therapy—to enhance pediatric resuscitation skills, familiarity with equipment and workflows, and communication during high-acuity events. Conducted in the clinical environment, these case-based and trauma-focused in-situ simulations, including quarterly sessions sessions conducted in collaboration with pediatric surgery, reinforce role clarity, resource utilization, systems-based practice, and interdisciplinary coordination. This series aims to strengthen readiness for high-acuity and critically injured pediatric patients by emphasizing shared mental models, escalation of care, coordinated team dynamics across services, and the inclusion of trainees when appropriate to reflect the usual structure of pediatric emergency and trauma care teams.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Review current evidence and best practices for pediatric emergency care and apply evidence-based approaches to recognize, assess, and manage critical pediatric emergencies, optimizing timely interventions, team communication, and patient outcomes.
  2. Practice effective interdisciplinary communication and teamwork skills to improve collaboration, patient safety, and outcomes during high-acuity pediatric events.
  3. Identify and apply pediatric emergency department systems, workflows, and equipment resources to support safe, efficient, and effective care of critically ill and injured children.
