Overview
Millions of Americans are using AI tools for mental health support, but the rules governing these technologies are fragmented, fast-moving, and often poorly understood — even by clinicians and researchers working in this space. This webinar brings together experts at the intersection of mental health, technology, and regulatory policy for a candid conversation about where things stand and where they need to go. Drawing on recent developments including the FDA's first advisory committee on generative AI mental health devices and the Trump administration's executive order challenging state AI laws, the discussion will examine how AI-enabled mental health technologies are currently categorized, what existing frameworks can and can't do, and what a more coherent approach might look like. The session is designed to be accessible to those new to the topic while offering substantive depth for those already working in this area.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Differentiate the major categories of AI-enabled mental health technologies, including general wellness tools, enforcement discretion products, and regulated medical devices.
  2. Explain how these distinctions influence regulatory oversight, safety expectations, and appropriate clinical use.
  3. Evaluate emerging regulatory, ethical, and equity considerations related to AI in mental health, including federal and state policy developments and the role of general-purpose AI systems.
  4. Assess the implications of prohibition versus access-oriented approaches on patients and clinicians.

In support of improving patient care, Stanford Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
