Pediatric Orthopedics and Sports Medicine: The Limping Child

Children may develop a limp for a variety of reasons, with causes that differ widely in urgency and management. This lecture provides clinicians with practical strategies to evaluate pediatric limping through a review of epidemiology, clinical presentation, physical examination, and diagnostic testing. Learners will explore common infectious and non-infectious causes, as well as less frequent but critical diagnoses, to improve clinical decision-making and timely management in pediatric patients.

1. Define a limp and differentiate common gait patterns in pediatric patients.
2. Identify common infectious causes of limping in children and select appropriate examination and treatment strategies.
3. Review common non-infectious causes of limping in children and determine appropriate diagnostic and management strategies.
4. Discuss uncommon but clinically significant causes of pediatric limping.
