HOPE Module 3: Oncologic Emergency

The Hospital Oncology Provider Education (HOPE) program has been meticulously developed to facilitate an intensive onboarding process for our Advanced Practice Providers (APP) and hospitalist oncology services. This self-directed initiative will feature a series of 12 modules that encompass a wide range of relevant general medicine and oncology topics, aimed at building foundational knowledge essential for success in the inpatient oncology setting specially related to Stanford Healthcare's principles and guidelines. This module includes identifying and managing hypercalcemia and hyperviscosity, tumor lysis syndrome, SVC Syndrome, spinal cord compression, ICANS and cytokine release syndrome.

AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (2.00 hours), AAPA Category 1 CME credits (2.00 hours), ANCC Contact Hours (2.00 hours), Non-Physician Participation Credit (2.00 hours)

1. Integrate diagnostic reasoning and evidence-based management strategies to recognize, differentiate, and stabilize oncology patients presenting with hypercalcemia or hyperviscosity, initiating timely interventions and specialist consultation to prevent end-organ complications.
2. Develop and implement an evidence-based approach to recognize, prevent, and manage tumor lysis syndrome (TLS), including risk stratification, laboratory monitoring, initiation of prophylaxis, and timely collaboration with nephrology or critical care specialists to prevent life-threatening complications.
3. Evaluate and manage patients with Superior Vena Cava (SVC) syndrome by recognizing its clinical presentation and underlying causes, interpreting appropriate diagnostic imaging, and implementing evidence-based, histology-specific treatment strategies—including timely stabilization, interventional, and oncologic therapies—to optimize patient outcomes.
4. Implement a timely, evidence-based approach to recognize, diagnose, and manage malignant spinal cord compression—including initiating emergent imaging and steroid therapy, coordinating multidisciplinary care, and integrating supportive measures to optimize neurologic recovery and patient outcomes.
5. Evaluate and manage patients with suspected ICANS by recognizing early neurologic symptoms, applying ICE-score grading, initiating steroid-based treatment per institutional protocols, and coordinating multidisciplinary care to prevent progression and optimize outcomes

Live Activities: Cancellations received in writing no less than 20 days before the course will be refunded. No refunds will be made on cancellations received after that date.
