Medication Empowerment introduces a new, person-centered approach to supporting individuals who use psychiatric medications as part of their recovery. In this interactive webinar, Dr. Pat Deegan will share insights from her lived experience of using psychiatric medications over time and challenge traditional “compliance” and “adherence” frameworks. Instead, she will present medication use as a personal journey that can involve uncertainty, choice, and growth. Participants will learn practical questions and strategies to help patients navigate these challenges and engage more meaningfully in decisions about their care. The session will include discussion, opportunities for reflection, and the exchange of new ideas. Participants will also receive tools to apply these concepts in their own clinical settings.

1. Distinguish between the cognitive and affective dimensions of decision making about using psychiatric medication.
2. Identify eight common challenges on the journey to use psychiatric medications to support recovery.
3. Discuss the challenges individuals report in using psychiatric medications.
4. Develop empathy for the lived experience of the journey into “Me-On-Medicine”.
5. Explain why Power Statements are so helpful in shifting the focus from what’s-the-matter-with-you, to what-matters-to-you.
