From Practice to Policy: Using Strategic Storytelling to Advocate for Climate Health Solutions

Stories are an essential tool for inspiring social change.  This transformative online program will strengthen your capacity to lead for climate health and equity in a variety of settings, by equipping you with the skills to craft your own powerful climate health public narrative.  In a learning community of health professional colleagues, we will learn the Public Narrative framework developed in community organizing, to effectively communicate a story of self that enables others to “get you”, a story of us that enables your community to “get each other” and a story of now that offers a clear compelling way for others to take action with you for solutions. 

Public Narrative is a fundamental leadership tool for leaders at any level in any community.  Nurses, physicians and pharmacists are among America’s most trusted professionals, and framing climate change as a health threat is the most effective messaging framing for boosting public support for climate action– which gives health professionals a unique opportunity for to help catalyze climate policy solutions in the interest of protecting health and equity– this training will help you find your voice to make the most of our opportunity!

Course Structure & Time Commitment
Synchronous sessions: 60min every other week for six (6) sessions beginning Fall 2025
Virtual Classes on Wednesdays: Sept 10, Sept 24, Oct 8, Oct 22, Nov 5, Nov 19 from 12-1pm PST.

Asynchronous work: On average, this program will require approx. 3-4 hours a week.
In the weeks alternating with live group sessions there will be asynchronous individual homework, as well as highly-recommended, but optional, office hours with Public Narrative coaches.

AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (11.50 hours), ANCC Contact Hours (11.50 hours), Non-Physician Participation Credit (11.50 hours)

1. Strengthen your leadership capacity as a health professional by crafting your own Public Narrative related to climate change and health.
2. Activate your community and decision-makers towards working together for equitable climate solutions– in the interest of protecting health.
3. Strengthen health as a key priority in policy discussions on climate change and in the media as a key pillar to drive bold equitable climate solutions.

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by Stanford Medicine, People Power Health, and Climate Health Now. Stanford Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team. 
 
Credit Designation 
American Medical Association (AMA) 
Stanford Medicine designates this synchronous and asynchronous activity for a maximum of 11.50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits^TM.  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. 

American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) 
Stanford Medicine designates this synchronous and asynchronous activity for a maximum of 11.5 ANCC contact hours.

Cancellation Policy
Live Activities: Cancellations received in writing no less than 20 days before the course will be refunded. No refunds will be made on cancellations received after that date. Self-paced Activities: No refunds will be made on cancellation requests after a learner accesses any part of the course content. Any cancellations refunded will less a 20% administrative fee.
