Overview
In this recorded Palliative Care Education Series presentation, Dr. Ashwin Ramayya discusses various neurosurgical techniques and interventions for treating cancer pain, focusing on emerging minimally invasive approaches. Dr. Ramayya highlights the complexity of cancer pain and the limitations of traditional pharmaceutical treatments, emphasizing the need for alternative strategies targeting the nervous system's pain processing mechanisms. Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Collaborate with the interventional pain team and other specialists to identify suitable candidates for neurosurgical interventions and tailor treatment plans based on individual patient preferences, pain characteristics, and functional status.
  2. Conduct larger clinical trials to generate high-quality data on the safety, efficacy, and patient variability in response to neurosurgical treatments for cancer pain, with a focus on refining targeting and optimizing the deployment of these interventions.
  3. Explore the potential of focused ultrasound thalamotomy for treating neuropathic pain in cancer patients, building on the promising case study presented and expanding to a larger clinical trial.
  4. Investigate the role of neurosurgical interventions, including implantable pumps or devices, in alleviating end-of-life suffering for patients with advanced cancer pain.
