Overview
In this recorded OB/GYN Grand Rounds presentation, Professor of Maternal Fetal Medicine & Co-Director, Collaborative for Maternal and Infant Health at UNC School of Medicine Dr. Alison Stuebe discusses breastfeeding, trust feeding, and reproductive justice. In her presentation, Dr. Stuebe covers the health benefits of breastfeeding for both the birthing parent and child, the importance of enabling and supporting breastfeeding within the context of reproductive justice, and strategies for maternity care providers to help patients achieve their infant feeding goals. Dr. Stuebe touches on key points that outline how breastfeeding has significant health benefits, potentially preventing thousands of deaths annually among birthing parents and children if optimal breastfeeding recommendations are met. She also elaborates on how breastfeeding rates differ across socioeconomic and racial/ethnic groups, reflecting structural factors and systemic racism that constrain reproductive options. Dr. Stuebe emphasizes that maternity care providers play a crucial role in enabling breastfeeding through evidence-based practices like the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative, shared decision-making, and anticipatory guidance. She then reviews numerical data which highlights the potential impact of breastfeeding, such as preventing 2,600 birthing parent deaths and 721 child deaths annually if optimal recommendations are met. The presentation also cites statistics on breastfeeding rates by race/ethnicity and neighborhood poverty levels. Dr. Stuebe concludes by emphasizing the importance of shared decision-making with patients, eliciting their values and preferences regarding infant feeding and providing unbiased information and recommendations and advocating for policies and regulations to address predatory marketing tactics by the formula industry and protect the right to breastfeed.
