Saturday Morning Workshops

The following workshops are available on a first come, first served basis and should be selected as part of your registration. Please select 1 for session 1 and 1 for session 2.
Session 1: Advanced POCUS Technique: Vexus Scan
8:30AM - 10:00AM
Taweevat Assavapokee, MD

In this session, participants will delve into more advanced Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) imaging. The focus will be on the principles of VExUS, which involves a systematic evaluation of venous congestion using Doppler ultrasound. Attendees will gain a comprehensive understanding of the application of VExUS in clinical practice. Attendees will have a chance to learn the VExUS scan and practice the technique on standardized patients. This session is designed for attendees who have some ultrasound experience but you do not need to be an expert to learn in this session.
Session 1: POCUS: Introduction to POCUS and Lung Ultrasound
8:30AM - 10:00AM
John Kugler, MD

In the workshop attendees will go over the basics of point of care ultrasound.  We will cover proper technique for holding the probe, using the ultrasound machine and obtaining images.  We will demonstrate lung ultrasound technique and attendees will have an opportunity to practice scanning to evaluate patient for the presence of pleural effusions, pneumothorax, pulmonary edema and pneumonia.
Session 1: Presence 5: Trauma Informed Care
8:30AM - 10:00AM
Donna M Zulman, MD
Session 1: Stanford 25
8:30AM - 10:00AM
Errol Ozdalga, MD

The Stanford 25 teaching sessions bring the experience of the bedside to the classroom. In this track you will have the opportunity to practice diverse physical exam maneuvers led by expert physicians, who lead the Stanford 25 sessions for our house staff.
Session 1: The 5 Minute Bedside Moment
8:30AM - 10:00AM
Poonam Hosamani, MD
Jeffrey Jen Chi, MD

One of the main barriers to bedside teaching can be time. During this workshop we will introduce a framework for teaching physical exam skills at the bedside in an engaging and efficient manner. You will have an opportunity view a demo of a bedside moment, and work in small groups to outline your own moment!
Break
10:00AM - 10:30AM
Session 2: 10 Minute Moment for Assessment/Feedback
10:30AM - 12:00PM
Maja Katrin Artandi, MD

Learn about real-time assessment of bedside skills using a novel formative assessment with built-in faculty development using this structure and scalable technique. Build upon the foundation of the 5-Minute Moment, the 10M2 can augment existing bedside teaching techniques.
Session 2: 5 Minute Moment for Racial Justice
10:30AM - 12:00PM
Samantha Wang, MD

Structural racism affects the way clinicians evaluate, diagnose and treat patients. Medical educators need tools to be able to teach anti-racism in clinical decision making. This session will provide concrete tools and teaching scripts for clinicians to transform their clinical and teaching practices to promote health equity and anti-racism.
Session 2: Basic Point of Care Echo
10:30AM - 12:00PM
John Kugler, MD

Attendees will learn the four basic cardiac views and what can be learned from each view.  We will review pathology, how to measure an EPSS (E point septal separation) for LV function estimation and TAPSE (tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion) for RV function assessment.  All attendees will have the opportunity to practice performing a POCUS echo.
Session 2: Inclusive Dermatology
10:30AM - 12:00PM
Alaina James, MD, PhD

Visual Diagnosis Skills Workshop Using the Eye as our Diagnostic Tool

Listen- We will analyze how well we listen to what people are telling us.
Look- We will discuss the importance of appropriate lighting, positioning, and thorough examination of the skin.
Look- We will discuss the importance of appropriate lighting, positioning, and thorough examination of the skin.
Learn- We will test our visual diagnostic acumen of patient cases with a focus on cutaneous manifestations in diverse skin tones. We will reflect on the visual clues present in each case and how to share these skills with our health care team.
Session 2: Presence 5 for Racial Justice
10:30AM - 12:00PM
Donna M Zulman, MD

The COVID-19 pandemic is amplifying racism and racial disparities in medicine. Race-based assumptions and biases against Black patients, in particular, affect clinical treatment decisions and cause stark and unacceptable racial health disparities. This workshop will introduce Presence for Racial Justice, an adaptation of Presence 5, which is an evidence-based framework for fostering humanism in medicine. The workshop will begin with a presentation of evidence for specific anti-racist communication practices, with a focus on interactions with Black patients.
Session 2: Stanford 25
