Overview
The Stanford Pain Relief Innovations lab, hosted by Dr. Beth Darnall, PhD, presents a virtual, monthly guest speaker series, inviting visiting professors in Pain Medicine, Pain Management and Pain Science. October's topic is "Hot Topics in Prescription Drug Surveillance: PDMPs & Ruan v. United States" presented by Jennifer Oliva, JD. During this lecture, Dr. Oliva will discuss the development, purpose, and scope of state prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs) and their risk scoring algorithms. Dr. Oliva will also discuss privacy and discrimination concerns that attend to PDMP risk scoring algorithms. She will explain the lack of regulatory oversight that apply to PDMP algorithms under federal and state law. She will also examine the Supreme Court’s recent decision in Ruan v. United States, a case that involved the scope of affirmative defenses that are available to controlled substance prescribers criminally charged with illegal distribution of prescription drugs under the federal Controlled Substances Act.
