Overview

The 7th Annual Stanford Bedside Teaching Symposium is an annual event which brings together medical educators from around the world to foster clinical teaching skills. We aim to build a sense of community among all those who attend and to increase both individual physical examination skills as well as the ability of those in attendance to teach and evaluate the clinical skills of their learners. We accomplish this with lectures by expert clinicians, live demonstrations and hands on workshops using both real and standardized patients. The content is aimed at early and mid-career physician educators but would also be appropriate for chief residents and senior residents looking for a career in medical education.

Stephen W Russell, MD
Brian T Garibaldi, MD

Learn how to structure a formative assessment of physical exam skills in this validated skills assessment. Participants will learn about the full APECS 8-station circuit where residents evaluate patients with actual physical exam findings while being observed by, and then receiving feedback from, 2 experienced faculty (Min Attendees: 10, Max Attendees: 30
Evidence-Based Physical Diagnosis
11:00AM - 12:30PM
Julia Blum Caton, MD
Amber Moore, MD
Zahir Kanjee-Khoja, MD

This workshop will equip participants to teach Evidence-based Physical Diagnosis (EBPD), which is defined by McGee as "the application of an evidence-based approach [that] quickly identifies the relatively few [physical exam] findings that predict" a diagnostic gold standard. The workshop will present the rationale and framework for EBPD, provide participants with pedagogical tool for delivering EBPD teaching to learners at the bedside, and create an opportunity for structured practice with this tool. (Max Attendees: 25)
POCUS 2: Thoracic Ultrasound and Volume Assessment
11:00AM - 12:30PM
John Kugler, MD
Andre Devendra Kumar, MD

In this workshop attendees will learn how to perform and interpret lung ultrasound, assess for pleural fluid, and perform a comprehensive volume assessment.  Attendees will have the opportunity to practice scanning themselves. (Min Attendees: 4, Max Attendees: 24)
Presence 5 for Racial Justice - Communication Strategies to Foster Health Equity
11:00AM - 12:30PM
Donna M Zulman
Catherine Johnson, Other

The COVID-19 pandemic is amplifying racism and racial disparities in medicine. Race-based assumptions and biases against Black patients, in particular, affect clinical treatment decisions and cause stark and unacceptable racial health disparities. This workshop will introduce Presence for Racial Justice, an adaptation of Presence 5, which is an evidence-based framework for fostering humanism in medicine. The workshop will begin with a presentation of evidence for specific anti-racist communication practices, with a focus on interactions with Black patients. (Min attendees: 6, Max attendees: 40)
