Overview

Internet Enduring Material Sponsored by Stanford University School of Medicine. Presented by the Division of Neuromuscular Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.

*Originally recorded on 12/3/2020 - 12/5/2020.

In this era of disease-specific treatments for individuals with SMA, the options for multidisciplinary medical and rehabilitative management are continuing to expand.  Optimal management and treatment recommendations are evolving while ethical considerations are weighed to treat and manage patients with SMA effectively.  The goal of these recorded sessions is to enhance the understanding of medical and rehabilitative management of SMA for healthcare providers who practice within or outside specialized centers, including: physicians; advanced care providers; physical, occupational, and speech therapists; nurses; social workers or other complex care team members.  As more individuals with SMA are being diagnosed earlier, treated more effectively, and living longer lives, community providers are increasingly engaged with this population and the groundbreaking therapeutics that are revolutionizing their care. Furthermore, novel treatments will soon require similar care consideration for many other neuromuscular disorders.

Participants will be provided ways to integrate new 2020 advances into comprehensive care; and use new SMA standards as a model for multi-disciplinary care of all neuromuscular disease.  These videos will include lectures that overview SMA multidisciplinary medical management across all ages and clinical presentations, including updates on available therapeutic treatments, issues related to newborn screening, and ethical considerations in the treatment and management of SMA.  The didactic videos will be followed by in-depth discussions of the evolving SMA phenotypes across the lifespan, with case-based review of best practices for multidisciplinary care by physical, occupational, and speech therapists as well as by medical providers. The sessions will review SMA phenotypes by functional status and include discussions to develop rehabilitation programs that identify appropriate evaluations, goals, interventions and exercise strategies.
