Overview
Please note this webinar will now take place on November 18, 2020.

The fundamentals of writing an effective op-ed: a how-to guide. This 2.5 hour session will guide attendees through the reporting, structuring and pitching of op-eds for newspapers and magazines. Dr. Seema Yasmin, a medical journalist and Director of the Stanford Health Communication Initiative, and Rob Steiner, Director of the Fellowships in Global Journalism at the University of Toronto, will intersperse the teachings with small-group work where attendees will begin to outline and structure their own op-eds.

This live webinar will be hosted on Zoom. The format will be short lectures followed by hands-on practice. Active participation is encouraged. 


Credits
AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (2.50 hours), Non-Physician Participation Credit (2.50 hours)

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Formulate new ideas for op-eds and research existing publications to prevent duplication
  2. Draft a structure for an effective and compelling op-ed
  3. Appropriately pitch editors using a concise and thorough pitch template
  4. Develop strategies to effectively work with an editor to revise an op-ed

Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR)
Completion of this RD/DTR profession-specific or IPCE activity awards CPEUs (One IPCE credit = One CPEU).
If the activity is dietetics-related but not targeted to RDs or DTRs, CPEUs may be claimed which are commensurate with participation in contact hours (One 60 minute hour = 1CPEU)

MOC Participation Threshold

Learner participates in verbal or chat-based case discussion/conversation as judged by a group leader or observer.

Learner completes answers to a quiz, percent of correct answers required will be set by provider.

Learner writes a reflective statement on making a commitment to change or maintaining an element of practice. Validity of all written statements will be assessed prior to awarding credit.

Learners engage adequately to select answers to questions using the ARS. Threshold set by provider.

Learner participates in the table-top discussion and writes a possible next step to each question/set point in discussion. Judged by a group leader or observer.

Learner participates in simulation as judged by a facilitator or observer.
