Date & Location
Tuesday, October 6, 2020, 12:00 AM - Tuesday, June 15, 2021, 12:00 AM

Overview

This activity will be expiring on June 15, 2021 due to content updates.

Internet Enduring Material Sponsored by Stanford University School of Medicine. Presented by the Division of Ophthalmology at Stanford University School of Medicine.

Optic disc drusen are deposits at the beginning of the optic nerve in the eye that can cause irreversible vision loss by interrupting signal transmission between the eye and the brain. Vision loss may occur progressively over time like glaucoma or suddenly like ischemic optic neuropathy. These deposits are present in about 2-4% of the general population and can become larger and calcified over time, which cause compression and vascular insult that damage the optic nerve - the connection between the eye and the brain.

The purpose of this CME course on optic disc drusen is to teach: (1) how optic disc drusen manifest in adults in children and how they cause vision loss, (2) genetic and systemic conditions associated with optic disc drusen, (3) biomarkers for optic disc drusen and vision loss, and (4) treatment and clinical trial design for optic disc drusen.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe the most common clinical presentations of adults and children with optic disc drusen
  2. Demonstrate the current best ophthalmic imaging techniques to evaluate patients with optic disc drusen and related causes of vision loss
  3. Appreciate the association of genetic conditions and optic disc drusen
  4. Discuss the best biomarkers of vision loss due to optic nerve diseases including optic disc drusen
  5. Examine novel approaches to treatment of optic neuropathies such as optic disc drusen, including regenerative therapy, visual stimulation, and neuroprotection
