Gender Recognition and Affirmative Care through Education (GRACE) Training: Foundational Knowledge for Working with Transgender and Gender-Diverse Patients 

Overview

This recurring monthly session will give healthcare providers and staff at LPCH, SMCH, and SHC a focused understanding of the healthcare needs of transgender and gender diverse populations. These patients often experience fear of discrimination and stigma in healthcare settings, which can negatively impact their health outcomes. 

This foundational training specifically addresses the unique healthcare needs of transgender and gender-diverse individuals, delivering didactic content that includes population health disparities, gender diversity terminology, and the culturally appropriate use of pronouns in patient communication. The training also incorporates interactive role-play exercises for participants to immediately apply didactic knowledge to clinical scenarios using the C-I-CARE framework for service excellence.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, learners should be able to:
  1. Describe the current state of health services and health needs specific to transgender and gender-diverse patients.
  2. Discuss assumptions related to gender identity that transgender and gender-diverse individuals frequently encounter, and how these assumptions impact their health outcomes.
  3.  Identify inclusive and affirming language to use in the workspace
  4. Demonstrate using personal pronouns and lived name
  5. Practice recovering from using the wrong pronouns and lived name
