Overview
CME Abroad | New Zealand aims to provide a unique blend of learning and adventure, allowing participants to reflect on medical practice and learn new skills to enhance their performance while immersing themselves in the rich tapestry of different cultures. During this 9-day educational trip, you will engage local faculty, gaining valuable communication skills and interdisciplinary care. This activity encourages participants to take an active role in learning and offers opportunities for learning improvisation and communication skills and reflecting on essential aspects of medical practice that are not often addressed. Participants will learn from stories, texts, and film clips to stimulate discussion and gain a deeper understanding of the human side of medicine and the joys of practice and scholarship. We will explore the University of Auckland, engage with the Office of the Minister of Health, and delve into discussions on health, nutrition, and alcohol's impact on public health. Immerse in Maori traditional medicine and conclude with wilderness medicine explorations. This program blends academic rigor with real-world insights, offering a holistic perspective on New Zealand's healthcare while fostering connections with key stakeholders.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Discuss the data regarding risks/benefits of alcohol, changing guidelines with regards to alcohol consumption levels, and potential distinctions as related to alcohol subtypes (wine versus other types of alcohol).
  2. Develop strategies to practice medicine at high-altitude and in the wilderness
  3. Describe the Maori's traditional views towards medicine, and how those traditional views are shaping healthcare for people of New Zealand today.
  4. Review the key logistics of the New Zealand healthcare system, the major medical issues facing the country today and potential challenges in the implementation of their healthcare system.
  5. Analyze the policy responses and healthcare strategies employed by New Zealand to address these medical challenges, and consider their potential application in different healthcare contexts.
  6. Evaluate the impact of changing alcohol classification schemes on patient counseling and health recommendations, incorporating current evidence into clinical decision-making.
  7. Integrate wilderness medicine practices specific to New Zealand into their clinical knowledge, improving their ability to manage medical emergencies in remote or outdoor settings.
