Overview
This training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for psychosis (CBTp) comprises of short workshops of 4 hours each, spread over six weeks, which will provide an opportunity not only to learn the CBTp model, but to develop clinical skills through practice. This training is suitable for clinicians with existing foundational knowledge (or higher) of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. CBTp is an evidenced based approach featured in best practice guidelines internationally, endorsed most recently in the USA by SAMHSA (2021) and the APA (2020). CBTp aims to reduce distress associated with the experience of psychosis and to improve functioning. The workshop will cover both formulation-driven and skills-focused CBTp, taking a culturally sensitive approach. Teaching will be via didactics, role play, experiential learning, and clinical case discussion. Participants will learn interventions for hearing voices and working with unusual beliefs (delusions), as well as approaches for working with negative symptoms. Participants are encouraged to read relevant material and/or practice training content in between workshop sessions.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Identify key components of CBTp.
  2. Develop competence in culturally sensitive formulations suitable for different levels of intervention with clients with psychosis and to use these formulations to identify where to target interventions.
  3. Develop skills in designing and using cognitive and behavioral interventions to target positive and negative symptoms.
  4. Discuss ongoing application of CBTp in clinical settings.
  5. Name implementation objectives for ongoing use of CBTp in the participant's clinical setting.
