Overview

We aim to build a sense of community among all those who attend and to increase both individual physical examination skills as well as the ability of those in attendance to teach and evaluate the clinical skills of their learners. We accomplish this with lectures by expert clinicians, live demonstrations and hands on workshops using both real and standardized patients.  This year we are excited to offer a poster session for attendees to present research and clinical cases that are related to bedside medicine and physical examination.

Introduction to Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS)
8:30AM - 10:15AM

This session covers the basics of POCUS including how to formulate appropriate clinical questions; manage the ultrasound probe;  and estimate CVP. Participants will also practice locating the IVC and JVP, using bedside ultrasound machines.  (Max 25 participants)
Sports Medicine - Lower Extremities
8:30AM - 10:15AM

(2 sessions, you are not required to sign up for both): These tracks review and refine examination skills of the joints with a focus on diagnosing injury and improving exam techniques. The first session focuses on the exam of the lower extremities.  And the second session focuses on the upper extremities, with the most time spent on the shoulder examination. (Max 25 participants)
Stanford 25, Part 1 (workshop continues at 10:30 am)
8:30AM - 10:15AM

The Stanford 25 teaching sessions bring the experience of the bedside to the classroom. In this track you will have the opportunity to practice diverse physical exam maneuvers led by expert physicians, who lead the Stanford 25 sessions for our house staff. (Max 35 participants)

The Physical Exam for Dizziness
8:30AM - 10:15AM

Dizziness is a chief complaint that many find onerous to evaluate. This track brings back the joy of bedside diagnosis by teaching an evidence-based approach to accurately and precisely resolving this common chief complaint, which often has a high diagnostic error rate. The session uses real life virtual cases with patient data and videos. It also includes curriculum to sharpen your ability to recognize subtle eye movement abnormalities and improve your physical exam technique using an iPhone/iPad based partial task trainer. (Max 10 participants)
Break
10:15AM - 10:30AM
APECS: The Assessment of Physical Examination and Communication Skills
10:30AM - 12:15PM

The Assessment of Physical Examination and Communication Skills is a novel method of providing formative feedback and evaluation of trainees. It was developed at Johns Hopkins and modeled on the MRCP UK PACES examination and a similar effort pioneered by Dr. Nayan Kothari at Saint Peter's University Hospital, New Jersey. This track showcases a demonstration of how the APECS Exam is performed and teaches how you can provide the same instruction at your institution.  (Max 35 participants)
Limited Cardiac Ultrasound
10:30AM - 12:15PM

This session covers the four basic cardiac views and what you can realistically learn for them.  Participants will obtain cardiac images on standardized patients and receive feedback on technique. (Max 25 participants)
Sports Medicine - Upper Extremities
10:30AM - 12:15PM

(2 sessions, you are not required to sign up for both): These tracks review and refine examination skills of the joints with a focus on diagnosing injury and improving exam techniques. The first session focuses on the exam of the lower extremities.  And the second session focuses on the upper extremities, with the most time spent on the shoulder examination. (Max 25 participants)

5 Minute Bedside Moment, Part 1 (workshop continues at 3:15 pm)
1:15PM - 3:00PM

To become a better bedside teacher one must develop one’s own teaching repertoire.  This track covers an overview on the 5-minute bedside moment - a method to deliver bedside medicine “pearls” when you have limited time; and gives participants the opportunity to develop their own teaching scripts, demonstrate them, and benefit from feedback. (Max 30 participants)
Cardiac Auscultation
1:15PM - 3:00PM

This track teaches a systematic way to approach the cardiac exam with an emphasis on interpretation of cardiac sounds.   (Max 35 participants)
Incorporating POCUS into Your Physical Examination
1:15PM - 3:00PM

Learn a novel method for teaching and practicing POCUS which always starts with the physical exam.  In the track you will have the opportunity to explore abnormal physical findings using POCUS. (Max 25 participants)
Using Art Appreciation to Enhance Your Physical Exam
1:15PM - 3:00PM

Examining the human body enriches and enhances our diagnostic abilities.  Participants will peruse the Cantor Arts Center and learn from a guided observation of the works of art and how to better diagnose at the bedside. The goal is to teach and inspire participants to create similar programs at their home institutions. (Max 15 participants)
