Overview

Point-of-care ultrasound is a clinical skill that involves diagnostic and procedure-based applications across a wide range of medical specialties. Ultrasound has been shown to improve the efficiency and accuracy of diagnosing life-threatening illness, as well as the safety and success of critical procedures. This course will provide clinically relevant didactic and hands-on point-of-care ultrasound teaching for acute care providers at all levels of practice. Participants will receive lectures on the indications, techniques and normal and abnormal findings for a wide variety of point-of-care ultrasound applications. There will also be abundant hands-on practice with standardized patients for each of the integrated ultrasound modalities.

At the end of the course, participants should feel more comfortable with applying point-of-care ultrasound concepts including but not limited to: cardiac, lung, trauma assessment, gallbladder, renal, aorta, IVC, DVT, musculoskeletal, critical care ultrasound and procedural guidance (IV access, thoracentesis, paracentesis, nerve block) to their clinical practice.

Statement of Need

Physicians who trained prior to the implementation of ultrasound teaching in residency and those who do not have the opportunity to utilize ultrasound frequently in clinical practice may find deficiencies in their point-of-care ultrasound skill set. Many advanced practice providers may also be lacking point-of-care ultrasound education during training that could strengthen their clinical acumen. The physical and knowledge-based skills required to perform ultrasound at the bedside necessitates regular reinforcement for competency retention.
