Pediatric Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Lecture Series: Current Concepts Review: Sideline Preparedness

As the school year gets underway and fall sports ramp up, sports medicine providers should be prepared to address the unique challenges of sideline care. This lecture will review current concepts in sideline preparedness, including the responsibilities of sideline physicians and the interprofessional management of athletes, the epidemiology of common injuries among high school and collegiate athletes, development of Emergency Action Plans, concussion and heat illness management, ethical considerations in sideline care, and the role of athletic trainers in the sideline coverage plan.

AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (1.00 hours), BOC Category A Hours/CEUs (1.00 hours), Non-Physician Participation Credit (1.00 hours), Occupational Therapy Contact Hours (1.00 hours), Physical Therapy Contact Hours (1.00 hours)

1. Describe the responsibilities of the sideline physician and the roles of athletic trainers and other healthcare professionals in the interprofessional management of athletes.
2. Identify common sideline injuries and illnesses encountered among high school and collegiate athletes based on current epidemiologic trends.
3. Develop Emergency Action Plans that incorporate concussion management and the prevention, recognition, and management of heat-related illness.
4. Evaluate ethical considerations that may influence clinical decision-making and the responsibilities of clinicians providing sideline coverage.
