Overview
Climate change has been described by the World Health Organization as “the greatest threat to global health of the 21st century,” with anticipated increases in heat-related illnesses, respiratory disease, infectious disease spread, and mental health impacts. Healthcare systems also contribute significantly to this crisis, accounting for 4.4% of global and up to 10% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. This lecture series will increase awareness among healthcare providers of the bidirectional relationship between climate change and health, highlight the clinical implications for patient care, and discuss strategies for reducing the environmental impact of healthcare delivery.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Describe the major health impacts of climate change, including heat-related illness, vector-borne disease, respiratory conditions, and the exacerbation of health inequities.
  2. Analyze the contribution of the healthcare sector to greenhouse gas emissions and identify opportunities to reduce the environmental footprint of clinical practice and health systems.
  3. Apply evidence-based strategies to integrate climate-related considerations into patient counseling, clinical workflows, quality improvement initiatives, and institutional sustainability efforts.
